Fall in Los Angeles: A Few Dates I’d Love to Go On

Fall in Los Angeles has always been a slightly different concept than fall anywhere else.

The change of seasons here don’t exactly bring crisp mornings and a dramatic display of changing leaves, but I think LA makes up for it in other ways. There’s something about the evenings getting darker sooner that makes everything feel softer… and suddenly I’m in the mood for someone special to cozy up with.

I’ve noticed the cultural calendar is filling up, and naturally, I’ve started imagining the dates I’d plan around some of the events.

Some call for getting dressed up, some involve wandering around outside, some will have us visiting the dark side, and some might inspire a little detour before we call it a night.

Whatever we get up to, I promise it’ll be fun. You’re in my company, after all. 😉

Start the Season Somewhere Beautiful

If we are going to welcome the season properly, we might as well do it at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The LA Philharmonic opens its season with its annual gala on October 1, with pianist Yuja Wang joining the orchestra for the evening.

This is the kind of date I’d want to make an entire evening of. Dinner somewhere downtown first, something fabulous to wear, music in one of the city’s most beautiful rooms, and plenty of time to savor each other’s company.

A Little Fall After Dark

We might not have traditional fall weather here, but Descanso Gardens is perfectly willing to give us pumpkins.

Carved returns in October, turning the gardens after dark into an illuminated little wonderland filled with pumpkins and seasonal installations. The evenings begin October 2, which seems like a perfectly good excuse to go see what they’ve done with the place.

This feels like the opposite of a formal date, which is exactly why I like it.

We can wander around without much of an agenda, find our favorites, and take a few terrible photos of each other.

Then we can see where the evening takes us. Maybe dinner, maybe somewhere for a drink, or maybe we decide that wandering through a garden together was only the beginning. I’m quite fond of dates that don’t come with a strict itinerary.

Something to Talk About

One of my favourite kinds of dates is one that gives us something new to discover together.

Beginning October 7, the Academy Museum opens We Are There: The Power of Documentary, an exhibition exploring documentary filmmaking through the work of 50 filmmakers and films spanning nearly a century.

A museum date has a very different rhythm from dinner or a performance.

There is room to wander. To stop when something catches our attention. To disagree. To tell stories. To discover that one of us has unexpectedly strong opinions about something the other has never considered.

And when we have had enough culture for one afternoon, Los Angeles gives us plenty of places nearby to continue the conversation.

  • Time: During regular museum hours
  • Location: Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Los Angeles

An Excuse to Dress Up

There are dates, and then there are the type of dates that deserve a little anticipation.

Carmen returns to LA Opera this autumn in a new production with a Spanish Gothic visual style, opening October 17 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Performances continue through November 7.

If you know the story, you already know this is not a particularly restrained evening.

Seduction. Jealousy. Obsession. Bad decisions.

In other words, excellent opera.

I would happily start with dinner downtown, dress for the occasion, settle into our seats and spend the evening watching everyone onstage make choices we can confidently claim we would never make ourselves.

We can debate that last part over a drink afterward.

  • Location: Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles

Planning a Little Further Ahead

Not every date needs to be spontaneous.

If you are already looking toward late November or December, there is one more production I have circled.

LA Opera’s Candide opens November 21 and runs through December 13. Bernstein’s combination of opera, Broadway and Voltaire’s very dark sense of humour makes this considerably less serious than the word “opera” might suggest. Patti LuPone is also part of the cast, which certainly does not hurt.

It sounds extravagant, clever and just a little absurd.

  • Times: Evening performances at 7:30 PM; Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM

So, What Should We Do?

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive guide to fall in Los Angeles. It’s a collection of the things that caught my attention and made me think, that could make an exciting date.

Maybe we dress up and go to the opera. Maybe we wander through illuminated gardens after dark. Maybe we spend an afternoon at a museum, or end up abandoning half of our plans them because we found somewhere else we’d rather explore.

I’m perfectly happy with that too. In fact, those are often the evenings I enjoy most. The ones where there’s enough of a plan to get us out the door, but enough room for the night to surprise us.

If something here caught your eye, tell me which one. We can put something interesting on our calendar.
